Quality at scale

To achieve the scalability of machines with the quality of humans requires a new way of thinking about translation. We’re changing the game.

Tough testing

Tough testing.

Only 10% of translators pass our entrance tests. We’re one of the only online services that truly tests their translator pool, and it makes all the difference.

All our translators pass through a minimum of a two-stage testing process before they can join. First, a five-part machine-graded test, then a translation task reviewed directly by our Senior Translators and checked against our Style Guide and detailed test instructions documents. An average of only one out of ten translators gets through this gruelling process without error. And only the people who make it through get the chance to translate for Gengo.

Continuous feedback.

We listen to customers, translators and experts, and continuously strive to improve.

Reviews

We review the overall quality of each language pair over time, and replace and train to keep that quality high.

Feedback ratings

We closely monitor feedback ratings left on translations, which allow us to flag issues and translator problems.

Senior Translators

Our Senior Translators are translation industry veterans, and on hand to help translators and resolve disputes.

Spot-checks

We spot-check jobs randomly, either with Senior Translators or via high-efficiency ‘native checking’.

Kaizen.

Kaizen is the Japanese word for 'continuous improvement', and a concept we believe in strongly.

Made famous by Toyota, the Japanese principle of kaizen involves closely observing a process or task, looking for improvements where possible, and implementing those improvements in a continuous feedback loop. Kaizen only happens when everyone involved in the process has the mindset and the power to suggest changes, always looking to create better efficiency and better quality. Through involving translators, customers, designers and developers in our product development, we continuously look for ways to make the translation process better, and create a better experience for you.

Kaizen

Quality technology

Quality technology.

To make things work at scale we built things from scratch, to simply build quality into the process . Translators work faster, make fewer errors, and stay.

A large part of what we do is simply about removing distractions from translators. Over time, we’ve built in better and stronger ways to ensure quality, such as post-checking via dedicated interfaces, with ways for translators to quickly flag up and correct errors. Our developer team is always working on improvements, such as translation memory integration that’s back compatible with other proprietary systems but accessible through better, simpler UIs.
