Malay translation tips
Malay vs. Indonesian
When working with English to Malay translations, translators should be careful not to confuse Malay with Indonesian. While the Malay and Indonesian languages are very closely related, and more or less mutually intelligible, there are still differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. While Indonesian is technically a dialect of Malay, they are still different and should not be treated as the same, especially if you are trying to specifically address a Malay audience with your translated content — native speakers will notice the difference.
Other ethnic minorities
Malaysia is comprised of several major ethnic minorities. In fact, Malays make up roughly 50% of the population while Chinese is 25%, Indians are around 7%, and indigenous groups make up another 11%. While thinking about your English to Malay business translation needs, you may want to consider Chinese as another language to translate your projects into in order to reach more of Malaysia and, in turn, China and other countries that read Chinese.
Malay language facts
- Malay is a major language spoken by those in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, southern Philippines, and Thailand. Standard Malay is also deemed the official language of Malaysia.
- While there are nearly 18 million people who speak Malay, there are over 200 million people who speak Indonesian, which is considered a form of Malay.
- The Malay language is written primarily using a Latin alphabet, called Rumi, although there is also an Arabic alphabet called Jawi that is used. Rumi is more common for both formal and informal purposes.
- Many dialects exist in the Malay language — the more popular of these is the southern dialect, which forms the basis of the standard Malay language, although there are many other major dialects including Bahasa Indonesian (Malay pidgin) and Baba Malay, which is spoken in many Malaysian-Chinese communities.
