Countdown to Going Global #8: Translate cleanly
Prior to translating your content with the service of your choice, you should do a bit of prep work to get the most out of it. Tip #8 is all about answering this exact question:
How do I make sure that my translated content is clean and consistent across multiple languages, with similar terms and style?
We’ve written extensively about getting more out of your translation work in an earlier post, which we strongly encourage that you read. In short, clean translation involves the following:
- Rewriting source content, simplifying copy without subtracting from meaning. Cleaner copy is faster and easier to translate
- Submit content in batches and keep files organized—put simply, if you’re translating into languages that you don’t understand, it’s all too easy to end up re-translating content that you can’t find or haven’t labeled and filed properly. Use solid naming conventions and folder structures for your files so that it’s easy not only for you to search through, but also current and future colleagues
- Create careful style guides and glossaries to make sure your brand voice and style is consistent across everything you translate. Style guides should be created in close collaboration with translators experienced and skilled in branding. Term glossaries, similar to style guides, will help translators use consistent terminology for words with many synonyms
Clean translation will save you time and money and give customers a better experience. After all of this heavy lifting, you’ll finally be ready for launch, which we’ll tackle in tip #9.
