The perks of dating a bilingual

Interracial relationships and marriages are on the rise in both the U.S. and U.K. In addition, the majority of these couples have different native languages. But despite the occasional miscommunication—as all partners sometimes experience—being in an multilingual relationship has its fair share of advantages.

As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, let’s take a look at some of the reasons you should date a bilingual or polyglot.

You’ll hear romantic lines in another language

Bilinguals often seem to have the upper hand in the dating game because certain pick-up lines sound more sophisticated and alluring in another language. Plus, singles can easily try to impress a stranger with a foreign line or two. For instance, the simple statement, “Your face brightened my day” seems more romantic in Italian:  “Il tuo viso ha illuminato la mia giornata”. Smooth-talking in French, the language of love, and blurting out, Vous êtes célibataire? Mais comment est-ce possible?” (“You’re single? How’s that possible?”) could make even the most stoic person blush.

Likewise, when bilinguals speak their second language, they usually have an accent that’s music to their partner’s ears. Research has also shown that bilingual people can have different personalities in each language. Perhaps that’s one of the best things about bilingual dating—you can expect plenty of pleasant surprises along the way.

You’ll have a language exchange partner

If you’re learning your partner’s mother tongue, having a constant language-exchange partner is a clear bonus. Making it a habit to communicate in the other’s native language, verbally or by text, is also a fun way to pick up a few phrases.

Meeting each other’s friends and families can expose you to language in a more relaxed setting while getting to know more about your significant other. In addition, your partner is a great resource when it comes to practicing, or picking up, colloquialisms and slang.

Studies also show that speaking a second language makes you see the world in a different way. Learning your partner’s language might help you better understand their views or ways of thinking.

You’ll be immersed in a new culture

Being with someone who has been raised differently to yourself is always an adventure. If your significant other speaks two languages, it’s more likely that they have lived in more than one country. Hence, you can look forward to the thrill of regularly learning about their culture and beliefs.

In any partnership, clear communication is of utmost importance. The partial language barrier that bilingual dating brings can be a challenge because cultures often have different direct or indirect communication strategies. Nonetheless, learning about your partner’s cultural standards early on may save you both from confusion and arguments in the future.

However, whether you share the same native language, understanding each other’s love language definitely goes a long way.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
