English to Italian Translation

Although both belong to the broad Indo-European language family, the Italian language’s roots in the Romantic language family and English’s roots in the Germanic language family can create difficulties when translating between the two. As with other Romantic languages, Italian uses gendered nouns which affect the adjectives and definite articles that go along with these nouns. As English nouns have no gender, only experienced English-Italian translators can be trusted to accurately overcome this challenge and produce work that is error-free and natural sounding to native speakers.

Moreover, a seasoned translator will also be equipped to take into account the different dialects of the Italian language. With five main dialects and many more local sub-dialects, it is important for translators to recognize the intended audience of a piece of writing and craft work which will have maximum impact accordingly.

Italian translation tips

Translation text expansion

For English to Italian translations, text can elongate by up to 10–15%. This is referred to as text expansion and stems from the simple fact that in some languages more words are needed to say the same thing. Expanded text can affect the layout, design and functionality of your website so should be carefully considered before beginning any English to Italian translation project.

Gendered terms

Unlike English, Italian is a gendered language. This means that words have different suffixes that indicate the male or female form, even when it comes to animals or inanimate objects. Adjectives also need to agree with the gender of the nouns they modify.

Italian language facts

Italian is a Romance language and part of the Indo-European language family. Of all the Romance languages, Italian is considered to be the closest to the vulgar Latin from which they are derived. In terms of vocabulary and grammar, Italian is closely linked to languages such as French, Spanish and Portuguese, while differing significantly from European languages such as German, Dutch and English.

  • Italian is spoken by over 85 million people worldwide as a first or second language.
  • Italian is an official language of Italy, Vatican City and San Marino, as well as one of the official languages of Switzerland.
  • Originally derived from Latin, the Italian language dates back to at least the 900s.
  • There are many regional variations and dialects of Standard Italian, including Tuscan, Corsican and Central Italian.

Italian regions and dialects

As the third most commonly spoken language in the European Union, an official language of five countries and one of the official working languages of the Council of Europe, the Italian language’s status as a major European language is clear. Italian speakers can also be found in the nation’s former territories in eastern and northern Africa, as well as in emigrant communities within countries including (but not limited to) the United States, Canada and Australia, making Italian a truly global language besides.

Within Italian there also exists a rich array of regional dialects. Northern, southern and central Italian constitute three overarching dialect categories, yet even within these there are significant differences, both in terms of pronunciation and vocabulary. This mosaic of dialects stems from Italy’s relatively recent unification into a single nation, having formerly been split up into various independent principalities and city-states.

Looking for more than just English to Italian translation? We offer a range of available languages, some of which are listed below:

Localizing websites using hreflang meta tags

When translating a website it’s important to ensure that search engines are able to understand exactly what language (or languages) your content is available in. In addition to the language attribute on the <html> tag, each page should also include a <head> section in which links to its localized equivalent are listed.

If the primary language of your website is English, for example, and you want to translate it into Italian, then every translated page should include the following block of code in the <head> section:

<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/about/" hreflang="en" />
<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/it/about/" hreflang="it" />

Keep in mind that this block should be added to both the original and the localized versions of your page (in this case: example.com/about/ & example.com/it/about/). By doing this, each page points to every available localized version of itself, making it easy for search engines to understand the structure of your site and display the appropriate translation for every user.

Targeting a language and a country

In addition to specifying the language that your content is written in, you can also specify particular countries that you would like to target. This is ideal for a language that is spoken in multiple countries, such as Italian (spoken in Italy, Switzerland and San Marino, among others). To do this, the country to be targeted is simply included in the hreflang attribute, like so:

<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/it/" hreflang="it" />
<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/it-CH/" hreflang="it-ch" />
<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/it-SM/" hreflang="it-sm" />
