Translation beyond the traditional industry

Early last week we held our second translator event. Entitled “Translation beyond the traditional industry,” we wanted to provide our existing and prospective translators with an opportunity to learn more about somewhat unconventional aspects that are popping up in the translation industry.

Gengo, as a people-powered translation platform, is shaking up the traditional translation industry with it’s goal of helping anyone read and publish across languages, with one click. But other interesting translation companies are out there, too. And even some conventional companies are doing things differently these days.

On the evening, our 40 guests enjoyed drinks and snacks before sitting down to listen to presentations from our two guest speakers. Kenji Takaoka of QR Translator explained how his exciting new online service is making it easy to produce signs and printouts in multiple languages. A Gengo customer since early 2014, QR Translator is using an innovative method using 2D barcodes and technology to bridge language barriers.

Thuy Tran, NHK World announcer and translator, spoke about behind-the-scenes aspects of her job as well as her experience and journey as a translator. In addition to her work at NHK, Thuy is also one of our English to Vietnamese senior translators and is responsible for grading translators’ work and giving constructive feedback to help our community grow and learn in their translation careers.

Not only a forum for discussion around translation, the event provided an important opportunity for translators to meet their virtual colleagues, learn more about Gengo and meet some of our team. With 15,000 Gengo translators working in 138 countries around the world working in an online environment, these limited opportunities to get to know our community are invaluable.

We are always looking for ways to grow our community, as well as developing ideas to engage and interact with our already existing crowd. Look out for future events in your city!
