English to Thai Translation Services

The English and Thai languages are highly dissimilar, each containing its own subtleties and complexities that can make translating between the two a challenge. Thai is a highly contextual language and uses tones to indicate meaning. Due to this, Thai-English translators must fully understand the purpose and meaning of the original text in order to translate it in a way that is both accurate and natural sounding to a native speaker.

What’s more, aside from linguistic factors, Thai-English translators must be aware of the cultural differences between Thailand and the West. Concepts and ideas that are commonplace in one place may seem alien in another, meaning it is the task of the translator to ensure that these concepts are communicated in a way that is relatable for the target audience.

English to Thai translation tips

Translation text expansion

When translating English to Thai, the volume of the text expands by an average of 15 percent. Due to the complexity of its characters, it is also much taller than most Latin languages, meaning it takes up more space vertically on the page. Both of these facts need to be taken into account when considering website formatting and design.

Formality and politeness

The Thai language has varying degrees of formality and politeness, with the use of each depending on the context and the audience. Only a highly experienced Thai-English translator with a good knowledge of the intended audience will be able to produce localized content that sounds natural and appropriate.

Thai language facts

  • Thai is the official language of Thailand and is spoken by approximately 45 million people worldwide.
  • Like other languages such as Chinese and Vietnamese, Thai is a tonal language.
  • Thai and Lao are very similar languages, making them mutually intelligible.
  • The first example of written Thai dates back to 1292 AD. It was found in Sukhothai, the former capital of the ancient Sukhothai Kingdom.

Thai varieties and dialects

The world’s 45 million Thai speakers can predominantly be found in Thailand itself. There exists, however, significant Thai emigrant communities across the globe, in countries including the US, Australia, Canada and India.

The Thai language can be split into several dialects, each roughly corresponding to a different geographic area. These dialects are Central Plains Thai, Capital Core Thai, Upper Central Thai, Southwestern Thai and Khorat Thai. Despite clear differences, these dialects are generally mutually intelligible.

Furthermore, though many locals think of them as dialects of Thai, linguists have identified several related but separate languages spoken within Thailand. These include Isan, Northern Thai and Southern Thai.

Localizing websites using hreflang meta tags

When translating a website it’s important to ensure that search engines are able to understand exactly what language (or languages) your content is available in. In addition to the language attribute on the <html> tag, each page should also include a <head> section in which links to its localized equivalent are listed.

If the primary language of your website is English, for example, and you want to translate it into Thai, then every translated page should include the following block of code in the <head> section:

<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/about/" hreflang="en" />
<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/th/about/" hreflang="th" />

Keep in mind that this block should be added to both the original and the localized versions of your page (in this case: example.com/about/ & example.com/th/about/). By doing this, each page points to every available localized version of itself, making it easy for search engines to understand the structure of your site and display the appropriate translation for every user.

Targeting a language and a country

In addition to specifying the language that your content is written in, you can also specify particular countries that you would like to target. This is ideal for a language that is spoken in multiple countries, such as Thai (spoken in Thailand, as well as in expatriate communities in countries such as the US and Australia). To do this, the country to be targeted is simply included in the hreflang attribute, like so:

<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/th/" hreflang="th" />
<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/th-US/" hreflang="th-us" />
<link rel="alternate" href="https://example.com/th-AU/" hreflang="th-au" />
